Temples Galore: Luxor, Karnak and Hatshepsut

Traveling down to Luxor and Thebes was a feast for the senses.  Admittedly, there were so many temples and ruins it’s a tad hard to distinguish them in retrospect.  But a few stood out and will stay with me forever.

Hatshepsut Temple was just discovered in the 19th century and is still undergoing restoration.  The temple rises out of the desert in a series of terraces that merge with the stunning limestone cliffs behind it.  It was powerful walking through the temple but even more beautiful seeing it from the skies via a hot air balloon ride.

With it’s grand colonnades, Luxor Temple sits along the waterfront in the heart of modern Luxor.  It is particularly beautiful and romantic at night.  I longed to have the place to myself to get lost and explore without the other tourists and hokey light show.  Another time and place perhaps…
